From its Off-Broadway development and limited engagements at Theatre Row and American Theatre of Actors foster-produced by the producers of Wicked through The Araca Project, The Tramaine Experience: An Urban Dramedy is an edgy interactive dramatic comedy solo performance experience set in a notorious inner-city Chicago housing project. This convivial yet slyly sobering one-man-show experience explores the humanity we all share beyond often overemphasized superficialities, putting both a cheerfully farcical and delicately heartbreaking lens on the environmental and experiential given circumstances and the intimate, often voiceless, fragility that shapes the lives of a real community. Ford forces us to look deeper into the lives, minds, and hearts of "inner-city ghetto’ racial stereotypes that are hardwired into America’s pop-cultural framework. Tramaine Montell Ford is a graduate of the A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University, Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts, The Tepper Semester, Aaron Sorkin Week, and The Ailey School: Official School of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, The Araca Project Producing Intensive, and the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia.
Plot
Tramaine is due to perform but, as per custom, is running late. We find out that the space the performance is to be held in is also the secret dwelling place of homeless tenant Mr. Jarvis Williams and we have in fact intruded on his territory, Cabrini Green Project's Community Center.
Reviews
“An engaging theatrical experience. For once I felt like I was involved in an engaging theatrical experience as opposed to a spectator intruding on a malaise. Ford does an elegant job at illustrating how the problems of Cabrini Green were endemic throughout the country, representing larger urban decay happening all over the nation.” -Trish Vignola, Broadway World
” takes us on a wild and raw journey to the Cabrini Green Projects where he grew up in Chicago and takes us out with pride, introducing us to five unforgettable characters…” –New York Times
“With the demolition of Cabrini Green, ‘The Tramaine Experience‘ has unwittingly elevated Ford to the status of creator of urban mythology.” –Harlem World
